Prof Erwin Payr, an Austrian-German surgeon considered an extraordinarily gifted surgeon, experimental scientist, scholar and mentor, was the first to use valves in CSF shunts. He used a saphenous vein with intact valves to shunt the lateral ventricle to the sagittal sinus in a 9-year-old girl with hydrocephalus in 1907.
